A dual-access flexible circuit refers to a specialized type of flexible circuit. that allows access from both the top and bottom but contains only a single layer of conductor traces. Unlike traditional double-sided flexible circuits with two layers of conductor traces. in dual-access flexible circuits, both the top and bottom sides. feature solderable pads, resembling double-sided FPCs. However, due to the presence of only one layer of conductor traces, the stack-up differs. This eliminates the need for plating through holes (PTH) to connect the top and bottom. while also simplifying the trace layout. This design advantageously suits specific applications. requiring simpler layouts and access to the circuit from two directions.

ABOUT DUAL ACCESS FLEXIBLE CIRCUITS

These circuits utilize copper as the sole substrate material. maintaining a consistent thickness of 1oz. Thinner copper variants, such as ½ oz, lack the requisite rigidity for these applications. Additionally, the coverlay thickness remains at least 1 mil (25um polyimide + 25um adhesive). resulting in a total thickness of 0.13mm, equivalent to the most cost-effective 1-layer FPC option.

The stack-up of a dual-access FPC bears some resemblance to a flat flexible cable (FFC). featuring a single layer of conductor traces but facilitating connections from both top and bottom sides. However, unlike FFCs, where coverlay openings are typically confined to edges (gold fingers). dual-access FPCs permit positioning anywhere on the board, enabling greater design versatility.
